Torres Announces $423K for Mental Health Research at Local University

Congresswoman Norma J. Torres (CA-35) today announced a $423,000 grant awarded to Western University of Health Sciences for mental health research. The grant, which is furnished by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) as part of its Academic Research Enhancement Awards (AREA), will help pay for research on cognition impairment in Angelman Syndrome, a genetic disorder that can lead to delayed development and intellectual disability.

"When federal research funding comes to the Inland Empire, not only do our professional students and local scientists benefits--our entire country is better off with the findings it produces," Rep. Norma J. Torres said. "This grant funding for mental health research will enable Western University, an innovative health sciences institution, to deliver answers to critical health issues Americans face. Good health is both physical and mental, and this research ensures we're focusing on investments in mental wellbeing as well."
