After Surveying Storm Damage in Coweta County, Ossoff, Warnock, Ferguson Urge President Biden to Issue Major Disaster Declaration

After surveying storm damage, U.S. Senators Jon Ossoff (D-GA) and Reverend Raphael Warnock (D-GA) and U.S. Representative Drew Ferguson (GA-03) recently penned a bipartisan letter to President Biden asking the Administration to issue a major disaster declaration as a result of the severe storm that damaged homes, schools and businesses across eight Georgia counties, including in the Newnan area.
The lawmakers' letter follows the state's request to the Administration for a major disaster declaration for the impacted counties, and comes after Senators Warnock,Senator Ossoff, and Congressman Ferguson visited the Newnan area recently to meet with community members and survey the storm damage ahead of briefing Administration officials on the needs.
Assessment teams comprised of local, state and federal emergency management officials verified more than $28 million in damage resulting from the severe storms and tornadoes. A major disaster declaration, and subsequent federal funding, would help residents in Coweta County and across the affected area to recover and rebuild their communities, including the more than 200 households that suffered significant damage or were completely destroyed.
"Newnan, in particular, needs immediate federal assistance to help rebuild homes and businesses damaged by the storms and tornadoes, leaving many residents homeless, jobless, and without the financial means to absorb the costs of repairs as a result of uninsured or underinsured damages," the lawmakers wrote."Based on the devastating impact of the storms and tornadoes, federal assistance, including Public Assistance for the eight counties listed above, Individual Assistance for Coweta County, and Hazard Mitigation statewide, will be critical for the recovery of our communities. We strongly support the state's request for a major disaster declaration, and we thank you for prompt consideration. We stand ready to work with you and your Administration to support these critical recovery efforts in Georgia."
