193,000 Jobs Added in January

Diaz-Balart: Republican Policies Continue to Stimulate Economy

WASHINGTON—The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported today that non-farm payroll employment increased by 193,000 jobs in January, and the unemployment rate declined to 4.7 percent, down from 4.9 percent in December. Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart (R-FL) today praised Republican economic policies for helping spur 29 consecutive months of job growth.

"Jobs keep coming and unemployment rates keep dropping," Diaz-Balart said. "Republican economic policies have stimulated our nation's steady economic growth and increased job opportunities. We are committed to policies that will continue to help the economy grow and provide good jobs for American workers."

Over 2.1 million new payroll jobs were created over the last year and 4.7 million new jobs in past 29 months. Unemployment rate has fallen significantly over that period from 6.3 percent in June, 2003, to the current rate of 4.7 percent.

"We need to provide U.S. businesses an economic environment that will allow them to prosper and provide good quality jobs for American workers," Diaz-Balart continued. "As President Bush stated in his State of the Union Address, on ‘a level playing field, no one can out-produce or out-compete the American worker.' I will work with my colleagues in Congress to pass policies that improve our nation's competitiveness."
