Proclamation - Wear Red for Women Day

WHEREAS, February is designated as American Heart Month; and

WHEREAS, Go Red For Women is the American Heart Association's national call to increase awareness of heart disease - the leading cause of death for women - and to inspire women to take charge of their heart health; and

WHEREAS, each year, cardiovascular diseases claim the lives of more than 480,000 women nationwide - more than the next six leading causes of death combined, including all cancers; and

WHEREAS, 53 percent of all female deaths each year result from cardiovascular disease, compared to 46 percent among males, and about 35,000 more women than men die each year from a stroke; and

NOW, THEREFORE, as Governor of the State of North Dakota, I do hereby proclaim February 3, 2006, WEAR RED FOR WOMEN DAY in the state of North Dakota and encourage all North Dakotans to commemorate this day by wearing red and empowering women to reduce their risk for cardiovascular disease.
