Velázquez Celebrates Start of Chinese New Year
01/27/06
NEW YORK - Congresswoman Nydia M. Velázquez (D-N.Y.) today issued the following statement to mark the start of the Chinese New Year, which begins January 29:
"I am pleased to join our community in celebrating the start of another New Year - the Year of the Dog, which signifies loyalty, honesty, and trust. This is a time to support each other and the City that we live in as we honor our commitments both personally and in our everyday civic duties.
"Every year, I look forward to watching our great City light up with lively festivals and cultural performances for this annual celebration of the new Lunar Year. For the next fifteen days, New Yorkers of various ages and ethnic backgrounds will unite with friends and families to honor ancestors, reflect on the past, and celebrate achievements within the Chinese community.
"With the tough economic times our country has endured over the past several years, it is exciting to watch this neighborhood continue to rebound. This year's celebration truly serves to honor the resiliency of Chinatown, and the ability of our residents and small business owners to lead the path to success. This community has always demonstrated that progress can be made when we join together to accomplish our goals.
"I wish the Chinese community all the best as you look forward to a year filled with peace and goodwill. Once again, congratulations and may you continue to be prosperous in the coming months - kung hoi fat choi."
