Rep. Stevens Votes to Pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act

Tonight, Rep. Haley Stevens voted to pass H.R. 1280, the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act.

"Passage of the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act is a critical step to address the issues of police brutality and racial discrimination," said Congresswoman Stevens. "This bill will support additional training, community-oriented policing, body and dashboard cameras, and other measures to increase accountability and transparency for law enforcement. We have to pursue real reform to build a strong basis of trust between police departments and the communities they serve."

This bill will:

* Prohibit federal, state, and local law enforcement from racial, religious and discriminatory profiling

* Mandate training on racial, religious, and discriminatory profiling for all law enforcement.

* Ban chokeholds at the federal level and allocates funding for state and local governments banning chokeholds.

* End no-knock warrants in drug cases at the federal level

* Require that deadly force be used only as a last resort and requires officers to employ de-escalation techniques first

* Make it a crime for a federal law enforcement officer to engage in a sexual act with an individual who is under arrest, in detention, or in custody

Congresswoman Stevens supported this bill when it passed the House in June, 2020.
