INDEPENDENCE DAY 2003
We live in the greatest nation on earth, a land of innovation
and enterprise, a land that produces heroes.
U. S. Sen. John Cornyn made the following statement regarding Independence Day 2003:
"On Independence Day, it's important to take time to reflect on where America came from and where we are going.
"We must never forget how much we owe to our Founding Fathers, to those who stood together to sign the Declaration of Independence, and changed the world with each stroke of the pen. We must always remember that our freedom was not won without cost, but bought and paid for with the sacrifices of generations.
"I know I speak for all Texans when I give thanks for our victory in Operation Iraqi Freedom this year. Never before has the world witnessed such a marvel of technology, training, dedication, and leadership in war. I am grateful for President Bush's steadfast leadership, and I am enormously proud of our heroic men and women in uniform, who bravely risk their lives every day around the world for the cause of freedom. We still have a big job to do in Iraqand we are doing it. After my visit to the region this past week, my confidence was reinforced in our armed services; they are remarkable men and women who make us all proud every day.
"What the evildoers will never understand is that America cannot be destroyed by weapons, armies, or terrorist attacks. No matter how many weapons they try to make, no matter what secret schemes they concoct, no matter what buildings they attempt to destroy, as long as the dream of freedom lives on within our hearts, America endures as a beacon of light shining for the entire world to see.
"We have some great challenges to overcome here in America as well. We must support the needs of our armed forces and our veterans. We must work to get our economy back on the right track, and create jobs, prosperity and hope. And we must ensure our homeland security for the safety of our families, and our future.
"Yet I am confident we will succeed in all our endeavors, because I know that we live in the greatest nation on earth, a land of innovation and enterprise, a land that produces heroes.
"Independence Day, like all others, is a great day to be an American."
