Rep. Boozman's Comments on President Bush's State of the Union Address

Washington, Jan 31 -

Representative John Boozman (R-AR) issued the following statement tonight after President Bush's State of the Union speech:

"Tonight, President Bush called for us to work together to make our nation stronger in this important chapter of our history. He laid out a strong and positive vision for the nation."

"President Bush gave us an optimistic look at our country. We have much to be positive about. However, he also acknowledged that there is work to be done both at home and abroad. He outlined his proposals for a better America. It is time for us to act on those issues."

"The president announced some bold new proposals during this speech, including some that can directly benefit Arkansas such as using switch grass for fuel."

On Iraq

"I recently returned from my fourth trip to visit the troops in Iraq can personally say that the president is right. We have made great progress there and cannot abandon the Iraqis as they move toward democracy. If we do, the terrorists will use the failed state, like they did the Taliban-controlled Afghanistan, as a safe haven to launch their attacks on freedom."

On the Economy

"Our economy has created over 4.6 million jobs in the last two-and-a-half years, more than Japan and the European Union combined. It is strong and we can make it stronger if we heed the president's call to make tax relief permanent and continue to promote pro-growth policies."

On Energy Independence

"The President called on the nation to free itself from our dependence on foreign oil. As a member of the House International Relations Committee, I can tell you without a doubt that we do not want to be dependent on the likes of Iran and Venezuela for our sources of energy. Relying on foreign sources of oil is bad policy now, and will only be worse for future generations if we don't take action now"
