McCollum Statement on the Palestinian Election Results

"The Palestinian election results serve as a wake-up call about the Palestinian people's frustration with the corruption in the Fatah party. Hamas has an extremely radical agenda of supporting and carrying out terror, including calling for the destruction of Israel.

"Hamas has been able to win the support of some Palestinians through its programs to aid the education and social welfare of its citizens. With its electoral victory, Hamas now has the opportunity and responsibility to reflect the Palestinian people's overwhelming support for the peace process. The only way for leaders of Hamas to be successful in governing is to lay down their arms and lift up the lives of the Palestinian people, and join the world community in affirming that Israel is a sovereign nation."
