Congressman Anthony G. Brown (MD-04) released the following statement after a meeting between House Democrats and Department of Defense Secretary-designate Lloyd Austin on his commitments to the civilian control of the military:
"President-elect Joe Biden has rightly put his faith in Gen. Lloyd Austin's character, leadership and experience. Today's discussion with Members of Congress underscored my confidence that Lloyd Austin is best suited to lead the Department of Defense at this unprecedented time in our nation's history.
"Lloyd Austin clearly set forth his vision for rebuilding the civilian-military relationship serving under the incoming Commander in Chief. The strong civilian led national security team formed by President-elect Biden is prepared to restore trust between those serving our country in uniform, civil servants tasked with protecting our national security and the general public. Lloyd Austin is uniquely qualified to bridge these divides as a barrier breaking secretary committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive culture at the Pentagon.
"The attack on the United States Capitol and attempted overthrow of our democracy has underscored why it is imperative President-elect Biden has his complete national security team in place as quickly as possible. I urge all Members of Congress to quickly and unanimously support a waiver for Lloyd Austin to ensure control of the Pentagon transitions to the Biden administration immediately."
