Congressman Anthony Brown: "Governor Hogan Owes Marylanders The Truth"

Congressman Anthony G. Brown (MD-04) released the following statement in response to Washington Post reporting that the 500,000 coronavirus tests from South Korea purchased by Governor Hogan for $9.46 million were flawed and never used:

"Governor Hogan owes Marylanders the truth. While Governor Hogan leveraged flawed tests to embark on a media tour and sell books, the people of Maryland suffered. Rather than save lives, Governor Hogan's mismanagement and lack of candor has wasted millions of taxpayer dollars and made it harder for our state to fight this deadly disease.

"From the beginning the Hogan administration knew these South Korean tests were incomplete, potentially ineffective, more expensive than readily available American-made tests and not being deployed to areas in our state in dire need of testing. Nevertheless, Governor Hogan and his team repeatedly waved away concerns and spread half-truths if not outright lies, while quietly trying to cover up their mistakes, costing Marylanders more time and money. Their hope was that the public wouldn't notice -- we did.

"The lack of accountability from Governor Hogan and his administration is unacceptable, especially amidst a public health crisis that is getting worse. The public needs to trust that their leaders are making informed decisions to protect their lives and livelihoods, not taking advantage of a crisis to stage publicity stunts and further their own ambitions. Saving lives is more important than the governor saving face."
