West Virginians Will Benefit from President's Proposals on Terrorism, Health, Energy

WASHINGTON, DC (1/31)- Congresswoman Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) released the following statement in response to President Bush's State of the Union Address to Congress on January 31, 2006:
"Tonight the President laid out an ambitious agenda: bold ideas for peace internationally and security at home together with several proposals on energy and health care that will ease the burden on West Virginians' pocketbooks."
"West Virginians have honorably sacrificed in America's War on Terror, and so I appreciated the resolve exhibited in the President's call to follow through in this war until our enemies are broken," said Capito, who was present in the House chamber during the address. "We've taken big strides toward a secure homeland since September 11th by giving law enforcement officials the tools they need to prevent more attacks. That's why we cannot turn away from long-term PATRIOT Act reauthorization."
"I was encouraged to hear the President speak to the problem of ever-rising health care costs. I agree that we can lessen this burden on West Virginia families by empowering them as consumers. The reality today is that people usually move between several jobs in their lives. So we need to give people portable health care that moves with them. Health Savings Accounts are a sensible way to achieve this because they let people contribute money tax-free to a portable account that they can draw on when they need to cover unexpected health care costs. Expanding the contribution limits would give West Virginians even more flexibility."
"In addition, West Virginians would benefit greatly if we can lessen America's reliance on foreign oil. I along with the President see coal as a valuable strategic resource because we have so much of it here at home. Alternative sources of energy remain on the President's agenda, and better use of nuclear power would certainly reduce our dependency on foreign sources of energy."
"This year we in Congress can make a difference for the future of West Virginia's economy and America's security, and tonight we heard some constructive ideas that can point us in the right direction."
