Torres: 2nd Impeachment is an Exceptional Shame that Trump Earned

Congresswoman Norma J. Torres (CA-35) today voted to impeach President Donald J. Trump for incitement of insurrection. The bipartisan measure passed the House of the Representatives by a vote of 232 to 197 including 10 Republicans who voted to impeach a president of their own political party. Today's historic vote makes Trump the first president ever to be rebuked by the Congress through impeachment twice.

The sole Article of Impeachment follows the deadly attack on the U.S. Capitol on January 6th by an angry mob incited by Trump. Congress was meeting that day to certify President-elect Joe Biden's victory in the 2020 Election, which Trump sought to disrupt. His actions ultimately led to six deaths, including two Capitol Hill police officers.

Rep. Torres, who was trapped in the House Gallery as tables and chairs were used to barricade rioters out, shared her harrowing experience in media accounts since the attack.

Torres also spoke passionately in favor of the Article of Impeachment during its only Congressional hearing, which took place in the House Rules Committee.

Rep. Torres released the following statement:

"President Trump frenzied a mob into attacking our Capitol -- he now carries the blood of six Americans, including two Capitol Hill police officers, on his hands," Rep. Torres said. "A President willing to incite sedition is a threat to our Constitution that Congress cannot ignore. These are the actions of someone who is unstable, unhinged, and clearly dangerous to the American people. He must be removed from office immediately -- every day Trump remains in office is another day he has control of our nuclear codes, our armed forces, and our nation's most important secrets.

"President Trump's behavior is deserving of exceptional shame, and a historic second impeachment is exactly that," Torres continued. "This wasn't just a vote to reject his politics of division and hate -- it was a vote to prevent him from holding office again, and a clear declaration that in the face of an autocrat, we will ensure our democracy carries on."
