Rep. Ted Budd Introduces Bills to Rein In Federal Regulations

Today, Rep. Ted Budd (R-NC) introduced a pair of bills to reduce out of control federal regulations.

Rep. Budd said in a statement:

"Given the fact that federal regulations cost our economy nearly $2 trillion every year, it's essential that we both reduce the size and scope of Washington's red tape and restrain the ability of federal bureaucrats to unilaterally make law. I'm proud to introduce two bills today that would accomplish this goal."

The first bill is the Lessening Regulatory Costs and Establishing a Federal Regulatory Budget Act. This legislation requires that for every new regulation that is created, two regulations must be eliminated. It also ensures that the total cost of regulations does not increase by requiring that, "agencies appoint a Regulatory Reform Officer to oversee regulatory reform initiatives and establish a Regulatory Reform Task Force to review the agency's regulations." This bill was also introduced by Reps. Matt Gaetz (R-FL), Scott DesJarlais (R-TN) , Scott Perry (R-PA) , and Jody Hice (R-GA).

The second bill is the Freedom From Regulations Act. This legislation ensures that independent agencies comply with important statutes so that the rules they write are clear, transparent, and lessen the burden on the American people. Some of these statutes include the Unfunded Mandates Reform Act, the Economic Growth and Regulatory Paperwork Reduction Act, and the Data Quality Act. This bill was also introduced by Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX).
