Statement of Congressman Bernie Sanders on the "State of the Union"

STATEMENT OF CONGRESSMAN BERNIE SANDERS ON THE "STATE OF THE UNION"
1/31/2006

I thought that what President Bush had to say about the need to break our dependency on Middle East oil and move to sustainable energy was absolutely right. I hope the budget he presents will be consistent with his remarks. On the other hand, I strongly disagree with him when he states that our economy is "healthy and vigorous." Since President Bush has been in office, private sector job creation has been abysmal, median household income has declined, 5 million more Americans have slipped into poverty, the number of uninsured Americans has grown by 6 million and workers throughout the country are in danger of losing their pensions. Our trade deficit, our national debt and energy prices are at an all time high. I hope that, in the coming year, President Bush is prepared to re-think some of his policies and work in a bi-partisan way so that government works for all Americans, and not just wealthy special interests.
