Rep. Cuellar's Statement on Vote to Increase Economic Impact Payments

Statement

Date: Dec. 23, 2020
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Henry Cuellar released the following statement in support of a vote by Unanimous Consent to increase the economic impact payments to $2,000:

"House Democrats and I have been fighting for more direct payments to the American people since the beginning. In May, I voted for the Heroes Act, which provided up to $6,000 in direct payments per household, because we recognized these payments are a critical lifeline during this crisis. However, during negotiations, Republicans refused to say the highest number that the President would accept for checks -- and would never go above $600 and in some cases $500.

"Since the President has agreed with House Democrats to increase direct payments to $2000, we now are waiting for Republican leadership to support our Unanimous Consent request.

"Families across the country are still hurting and they deserve additional relief immediately. I am ready to increase direct payments to save the lives and livelihoods of the American people. I am calling on my colleagues across the aisle to join.

"Enough time has been wasted. It's time for action- let's vote."
