Slotkin Declines to Support Nancy Pelosi As Speaker of the House

Statement

U.S. Rep. Elissa Slotkin (MI-08) released the following statement after voting not to support Nancy Pelosi as Speaker of the House today, in accordance with her commitment to 8th district constituents:

"In the spring of 2018, before I was elected, I made a commitment to my constituents not to support Nancy Pelosi as Speaker of the House. I believed then as I do now, that it is time for new leadership on both sides of the aisle in Washington. And that's how I have voted ---- today, and two years ago. I want to be clear that I keep the commitments I make to my constituents, even when I am pressured to do otherwise. Both in 2018 and again today, I have been up front about my vote and discussed it directly with the Speaker, with whom I have a positive, professional relationship.

"Now, more important than DC parlor games, it's time to get to work. No matter who occupies positions of leadership in Washington, people expect us to work together to get things done, for their pocketbooks and their kids ---- especially in the midst of a generational health and economic crisis. That's our job, and our overwhelming mandate in this new Congress. That is my mission as I once again take the oath of office, and am sworn in to represent the people of Michigan's 8th Congressional District."
