Torres Responds to Trump-Incited Assault on Democracy

Congresswoman Norma J. Torres (CA-35) today responded to a brazen mob frenzied by the president storming the Capitol complex. The violence led to one casualty, the destruction of revered public property on Capitol grounds, and the debasement of American democracy on the international stage.

The day's events were the result of an unconstitutional effort by President Donald Trump and his allies on Capitol Hill to overturn the will of the American people as Congress certified President-elect Joe Biden's Electoral College victory.

Rep. Torres, who was in the House Chamber as doors were barricaded with tables and chairs to protect lawmakers from the mob, released the following statement:

"What took place in the U.S. Capitol was sedition plain and simple -- incited by the president, encouraged by his loyalists, and carried out by the most militant members of his base," Rep. Torres said. "A woman died because of their recklessness, and our democracy was tarnished for years to come.

"Every public official who aided and abetted this horrific event, including Donald Trump himself, should be stripped of the honor to serve the public," Torres continued. "If what transpired isn't cause to invoke the 25th Amendment, then what is? Any President who would unleash a riot on a session of Congress and endanger his own Vice President has no place in public office, let alone the most esteemed office in our land.

"America stands at a crossroads, and whether Trump likes it or not, this country is rejecting his path of mass manipulation and violence," Torres added. "The next two weeks are a time to be vigilant, just as the coming four years will be a time to rebuild. I am eager to work with the Biden-Harris Administration and every good faith lawmaker who shares our commitment to the U.S. Constitution, to the truth, and to the pursuit of peace on American streets."
