Pelosi Statement on Palestinian Elections

Washington, D.C.- House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement this evening on the Palestinian elections:

"The success of Hamas in the Palestinian elections leaves them with a crucial choice. If the leaders of Hamas are interested in a better future for the Palestinian people, they must quickly move to recognize Israel and guarantee its right to exist. They cannot expect the international community to assist a Palestinian government that is not committed to resolving its differences with Israel peacefully.

"In the interest of peace in the Middle East, we must redouble our diplomatic efforts to convince Hamas to disavow the tactics of a terrorist organization and embrace the political process as the best way to move the Palestinian people forward."
