Issue Position: Criminal Justice & Policing

Issue Position

Our criminal justice and policing systems need reform. The systemic racism in these systems must be rooted out, destroyed, and processes put into place that eliminate inequities. We cannot undo the crimes and injustices of the past nor make atonement with all the money in the world. What we can do is make systemic changes to these institutions. I commit to supporting the legislation created by People of Color and Indigenous (POCI) Caucus in the 2020 special legislative session. The Reimagining Public Safety Act, Reclaiming Community Oversight Act, and Reforming Accountability Act are just the beginning. It is my duty to do my part to remove systemic racism in these institutions, and as your Representative, I will.

The murder of George Floyd sparked a movement that many in our Black and brown communities have been leading for years. The majority of Minnesotans recognize the racial disparities within these systems and want to reimagine them in a way that will truly keep everyone safe. As your Representative, I commit to do my duty to honor the life of George Floyd by not only reflecting on my own white privilege, but working to reform the institutions that took his life and prevent others from living fully.
