Congressman García's Statement on Supreme Court's Decision to Stop the Census

Statement

Today the Supreme Court agreed with the Trump administration and issued a decision to suspend the 2020 census from continuing through the end of October. Congressman Jesus "Chuy" Garcia issued the following statement:

"Today the Supreme Court sided with the Trump Administration to end the census count early. The impact of this decision will hurt families in low-income and underrepresented neighborhoods, rural areas and tribal lands for the next ten years, perpetuating a cycle of disinvestment. For Latino communities, an abrupt end to the Census will render thousands of families invisible to the government, robbing them of vital resources including funding for schools, road repairs, and health care services.

"Since taking the oath, President Trump made the disenfranchisement of voters a core tenet of his Presidency. From efforts to scare immigrants from participating in the Census by including a citizenship question, to ending the Census timeline early -- President Trump has done everything in his power to deprive underrepresented communities of political representation.

"Halting the census under the guise of expediency is an affront to the Constitution and undermines the right of every person to be counted. The civic, economic and political power of our communities is at stake and we will do everything in our power to protect it today, tomorrow, and for our future generations."
