Our Republican majority has passed a number of bills in recent years that seek to address the prescription and heroin drug epidemics in our state. While progress is being made, this issue is complex and will require help from each of us. These epidemics are fierce and devastating -- Kentucky is often listed in the top four states in the nation for drug overdose mortality. According to the math, Kentucky loses over 1,000 Kentuckians each year from prescription drug abuse alone.
We need to decrease over-prescription by holding our doctors accountable. We need more local solutions and we need to encourage families to invest in their children's activities. We need to provide adequate care for addiction and offer hope to our citizens in bad situations. Lastly, we need tough penalties for drug dealers.
