We have to deal with the reality that too many of our children are behind bars. Our district has one of the highest rates of youth incarceration in the state. Our children and our residents deserve and need someone who not only understands the criminal justice systems, but who has worked to reform it from the inside out. In her career, Michele has tackled this issue and brought solutions to District 70. As a legislator, Michele will continue to fight for our children and will file legislation that addresses youth incarceration and diversion programs to ensure that our children are being given every chance to thrive and reach their potential.
In 2018, more than 60 percent of Floridians voted for Amendment 4 to restore the right to vote to 1.4 million returning citizens. Since then, Amendment 4 has been under attack, and certain members of the legislature are attempting to further obstruct returning citizens' right to vote by making repayment of court fines mandatory- instituting a modern day poll tax. Returning citizens who have paid their debt deserve the right to vote and to contribute to our democracy. The millions of Florida voters, especially those in District 70, deserve a leader who will fight to ensure that returning citizens and all residents who are registered can participate in elections without systemic obstruction. Michele will fight to protect Amendment 4.
