Keeping the Economy Moving

STRAIGHT TALK WITH SAM

January 2, 2006

The more things change, the more they stay the same. In 1986, Ronald Reagan said the government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: "If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving; subsidize it." I believe that keeping our economy on the right track means that we constantly have to guard against government bureaucrats who still believe in that outdated philosophy.

Our economy works the best when we let taxpayers spend their own money. That is why I have supported tax relief for all Americans. Since August of 2003 when tax relief was passed, we have seen continuous growth in our economy. Nationwide over 4.3 million jobs have been created.

There are two reasons that cutting taxes makes sense. The first reason is because you and I are over taxed. It is your hard-earned money to begin with and the federal government should only take what it absolutely needs to function.

The second is that tax cuts help create jobs. When Missourians have more of their money to spend on goods and services, local businesses are the winners. Missourians also can use more money to invest in their own businesses or create new ones.

Like Ronald Reagan I believe the federal government's problem is not that it taxes too little, but that it spends too much. I will continue to support tax relief that lets all taxpayers keep and spend more of their own money.
