CONGRESSMAN ADERHOLT TAKES ANOTHER STAND AGAINST METH

"We will continue to fight this problem until our area and our children are safe from methamphetamines," said Congressman Aderholt.

WASHINGTON, DC -- Congressman Robert Aderholt (R-Haleyville) today announced the House passage of the USA PATRIOT and Terrorism Prevention Reauthorization Act of 2005 (H.R. 3199), 251 to 174 . Title VII of this legislation, The Combat Methamphetamine Epidemic Act of 2005, will restrict the sale of medicines used to make methamphetamine (meth), provide support for local authorities, and help protect the environment from meth lab contamination. The legislation will also stiffen federal penalties for meth traffickers or those who produce or deal the drug in the presence of children.

"I am especially pleased to see stricter penalties imposed on meth traffickers. The punishments should be so severe that people will not even consider pushing drugs on our children and crippling our communities by providing these illegal, toxic substances," said Congressman Aderholt. "I have full confidence in our state and local agencies' ability to fight this problem on the ground. Because of the magnitude of the problem we must help provide the federal resources they need."

State Representative Frank McDaniel (D-Albertville) added, "I am very pleased to hear that Congress has dealt with the issue of ‘crystal meth' and passed some very responsive legislation. The fact that it addresses mail order, internet, and ‘flea market' sales along with grant programs that assist states with drug endangered children adds greatly to the legislation that I led in passing in Alabama this year."

Congressman Aderholt has consistently supported and cosponsored legislation to fight the meth epidemic in north Alabama and throughout the Nation. Today he joined House Majority Whip and acting Majority Leader Roy Blunt and fellow members of the Congressional Caucus to Fight and Control Methamphetamine for a press conference on this legislation.

"This is solid legislation with solid provisions for prosecution, monitoring, and precursor control. I am proud to support the bill and am confident that it brings us one step closer to winning the fight against meth," added the congressman.
