A Prototype of a Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicle

Rep. Bernard Sanders (I-VT) this week test drove a prototype of a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle created by General Motors. The car is fitted with an environmentally-friendly fuel cell propulsion system that emits only pure water. The five-passenger car has a top speed is 99 miles per hour and has a range of 168-249 miles between fueling. GM is building a fleet of 40 fuel cell vehicles funded partially by an award from the U.S. Department of Energy to demonstrate fuel cell technology.

Sanders said, "This country needs an energy revolution and this hydrogen fuel cell car is part of that revolution. The good news is that there are prototypes out that drive and drive well. The bad news is that, according to GM and other manufacturers, cars like this are not going to be on the market for seven, eight, or ten years and frankly, that's absurd. Between the government and the private sector, if we are serious about moving to energy efficiency in this country and breaking our dependency on fossil fuels, we have got to move a lot faster than that. But this is a very exciting development."
