SANDERS APPLAUDS SENATE VOTE ON PATRIOT ACT

Congressman Bernie Sanders expressed strong support for the bi-partisan vote in the U.S. Senate that would prevent passage of the USA Patriot Act as presently written. Sanders voted against the original Patriot Act and has helped spearhead efforts in the U.S. House against its renewal and expansion - successfully offering a floor amendment earlier that would protect the privacy of Americans' reading records. Sanders voted against this same Patriot Act renewal bill earlier this week and Senators Leahy and Jeffords voted against the bill in the Senate today. Sanders said,

"All of us want to protect the American people from terrorism, but we must do it in a way that does not undermine the constitutional rights that make us a free country. I applaud those members of the Senate, progressive and conservative, Democrat and Republican, -- including both of Vermont's Senators -- who are standing together to protect those freedoms that the American people hold dear."
