DeLauro: Budget Cuts Have Moral Implications
- Supports Faith Community's Call to Action for Medicaid, Food Stamps, Student Aid -
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (Conn.-3) today said that the budget cuts Congress is about to pass will have moral implications. She issued the following statement as religious leaders, pastors, and church workers from around the country gather in Washington to call attention to the budget cuts recommended by the U.S. House. The budget reconciliation bill, which narrowly passed the House 217-215 in the early morning hours of Friday, November 18, includes $54 billion in spending cuts, which include $11 billion in Medicaid cuts, $700 million in Food Stamp cuts, and $14 billion in cuts to student aid programs.
"I commend the religious community for their courage in speaking out against the unjust, immoral budget passed by the U.S. House of Representatives. The budget the Republican Congress is about to enact into law will have serious consequences for families trying to make ends meet. People of faith must have their voices heard in this debate on the future of our country.
"Budgets are moral documents that reflect our nation's shared values. Slashing programs such as Medicaid, Food Stamps, and student aid not only fails to reflect these values, but will have moral implications for all Americans."
The Fiscal Year 2007 budget has passed both chambers of Congress and is now being worked out in conference.
