Brownley Introduces Bill to Make Infertility Care Part of VA Medical Services

Recently, Congresswoman Julia Brownley (D-CA) introduced the Veterans Infertility Treatment Act of 2020, which would direct the Secretary of Veterans Affairs to provide coverage for infertility treatment and standard fertility preservation services for our nation's veterans.

"As Chairwoman of the House Veterans' Affairs Health Subcommittee, these issues are critically important to me," said Congresswoman Brownley. "My bill would expand VA health care to cover enrolled veterans struggling with infertility, regardless of marital status, service-connection, or need for donated genetic material. Our veterans put their lives on the line to protect our families, the least we can do is help them build theirs."

The Veterans Infertility Treatment Act of 2020 would:

Make infertility care, including Assisted Reproductive Technology (like IVF), part of the medical services provided by VA to any veteran and/or partner (if applicable) who needs infertility care to achieve a pregnancy
Allow IVF for up to three successful pregnancies or six attempted cycles or coverage of three adoptions
Repeal the ban on use of donated gametes and embryos
Direct VA to produce an annual report to Congress on infertility services provided in the community and/or in coordination with the Department of Defense and the Indian Health Service
Direct the Secretary of Veterans Affairs to research infertility in the veteran population
