House Dems rally across country to protect Americans who depend on Postal Service

Statement

More than 100 House Democrats answered House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's call for a Postal Day of Action this week, holding more than 70 events across the country to protect the Postal Service and the millions of Americans who depend on it for everything from: prescriptions, Social Security benefits, paychecks, tax returns and absentee ballots.

Thanks to the massive activism of Democrats and the American people, Postmaster General DeJoy announced an alleged pause in operational changes delaying the mail. However, DeJoy's misleading attempt to save face is wholly insufficient and does not reverse damage already wreaked.

-The Postmaster General admitted that he has no intention of replacing the sorting machines, blue mailboxes and other key mail infrastructure that have been removed and that plans for overtime which are critical for the timely delivery of mail are not in the works.
-All of these changes directly jeopardize the election and disproportionately threaten to disenfranchise voters in communities of color.

The House plans to vote Saturday on the Delivering for America Act. The legislation prohibits the Postal Service from implementing any changes to operations or level of service it had in place on January 1, 2020 and provides $25 billion in critical funding to support the Postal Service: the same level of funding recommended by the USPS Board of Governors, which is composed of 100 percent Trump appointees.

"A temporary pause in destruction doesn't undo the damage that's already been done. Americans rely on the mail for their medicines, paychecks, Social Security benefits, ballots and tax returns -- and they deserve to see mailboxes put back, sorting machines turned on and hours restored. That's why House Democrats are rallying with Americans across the country and passing legislation to protect the Postal Service and the people who depend on it," said House Democratic Policy and Communications Committee Chairman David Cicilline (RI-1) and Cochairs Matt Cartwright (PA-8), Debbie Dingell (M-12) and Ted Lieu (CA-33).
