Matsui Briefed on Folsom Integration Project

Sacramento flood control hasn't lost time, Interagency collaboration results in better coordination of flood control efforts

Sacramento, CA - Congresswoman Doris O. Matsui (CA-5) received a briefing from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Bureau of Reclamation, the Sacramento Area Flood Control Agency (SAFCA), and the Department of Water Resources (DWR) on the positive progress on the auxiliary spillway proposal. This briefing followed an update the local office gave the regional leadership of the Corps and the Bureau.

"This collaborative effort on the part of the Bureau, the Corps, SAFCA, and DWR is an example of how government should work that unfortunately, doesn't happen as often as it should," said Congresswoman Matsui.

"Six months ago, Sacramento was facing a four to five-year delay, while the Corps reviewed the Folsom Modifications project in a GRR [General Reevaluation Report]. Now the GRR is off-the-table, we have a project that is back on track, and a project that can serve as an example to other areas on how to address flood control and dam safety issues. While I know we still have challenges on the path to improving our flood control, I am very encouraged about Sacramento's flood control outlook."

During the meeting with regional leadership, the Corps announced that the GRR is no longer being pursued. Additionally, the flood control partners - the Corps, the Bureau, the SAFCA, and the DWR - announced that by pursuing the spillway they are still expected to reach the same level of protection - 140-year - at the same time the Folsom Modifications project was originally supposed to be completed. Folsom Modifications was expected to be completed in 2013.

"Because of this amazing collaboration, significant work has been done in this short period of time and it seems Sacramento has not lost time on increasing our level of flood protection."
