Issue Position: Right to Try

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2020

President Trump signed the Trickett Wendler, Frank Mongiello, Jordan McLinn, and Matthew Bellina Right to Try Act on May 30th, 2018. I led the House efforts on this bill which allows terminally ill patients access to medications that have passed basic FDA safety testing but are working their way through the long approval process.

My legislation was supported by hundreds of my colleagues--on both sides of the aisle--and was endorsed by President Trump in his first State of the Union address. In an era of hyper-partisanship, I hold Right to Try as a perfect example of a cause we can all support.

My dear friend, Laura Knaperek, championed the Right to Try law in Arizona. My predecessor, Matt Salmon, also worked to get this bill passed. I am thankful they laid the foundation for my efforts to bring hope to those who are battling terminal illness. I hope that many lives may be extended through the availability of medicines because of the Right to Try law.
