Gianforte Requests Information on USPS Cuts to Service

Statement

Congressman Greg Gianforte (R-Mont.) today requested the Postmaster General of the U.S. Postal Service (USPS), Louis DeJoy, provide information about how the removal of collection boxes in Montana will impact mail delivery and about other potential changes in USPS service.

"I am writing to you after reports of reductions in mail collections boxes in several Montana cities. These reports mention Billings, Missoula, Bozeman, and Lewistown. I am concerned at the potential negative impact these cuts will have on mail delivery," Gianforte wrote in a letter to DeJoy. "I ask that you provide additional data on how removal of collection boxes in Montana will impact delivery times, details about the process and criteria for determining how changes to delivery are being made, and information about other potential changes that alter mail delivery for Montanans."

Gianforte concluded, "While I appreciate attempts to improve efficiency, it is critical that the USPS not delay mail delivery."

Today's letter follows a letter from Gianforte to DeJoy on August 6 urging the Postmaster General to reverse USPS policies that delay mail delivery.

A USPS memo, dated July 10, described how mail carriers may leave undelivered mail at a distribution center for delivery the following day, if carriers are unable to complete their route on time.

Dear Postmaster General DeJoy,

I am writing to you after reports of reductions in mail collections boxes in several Montana cities. These reports mention Billings, Missoula, Bozeman, and Lewistown. I am concerned at the potential negative impact these cuts will have on mail delivery. I am a strong proponent of the USPS and will continue to ensure that Montanans have access to reliable mail service. During the current public health crisis, it is more important than ever the USPS continue to provide prompt, dependable delivery service. I appreciate that the Postal Service faces financial challenges, and I have cosponsored and voted for legislation to fix the pension prefunding issue. Regardless, balancing the books by slowing delivery and reducing options Montanans have come to rely on gives me great concern.

While I appreciate attempts to improve efficiency, it is critical that the USPS not delay mail delivery. I look forward to your response.
