Murphy Statement on New York Attorney General's Lawsuit to Dissolve the NRA

U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) on Thursday made the following statement after the New York Attorney General Letitia James moved to dissolve the National Rifle Association (NRA) after an 18-month investigation that found evidence of fraud and abuse:

"The National Rifle Association doesn't represent gun owners -- they exist to protect the profits of the gun industry. New York Attorney General Letitia James's lawsuit alleging a web of financial crimes only confirms this," said Murphy. "Last year, we got really close to a bipartisan deal in Congress to expand background checks but Trump's alliance to the NRA stopped it. This lawsuit should be a wakeup call that the NRA is a self-serving, tangled web of corruption that fails to represent the interests of responsible gun owners, including the 74% of NRA members who support universal background checks. This lawsuit, coupled with the growing strength of the gun violence prevention movement, is proof of NRA's quickly loosening grip over Washington."
