Hirono Statement on the Sanders Amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act

Senator Mazie HIrono issued the following statement on her vote in favor of the Sanders Amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA):

"As a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, I am a strong supporter of the role our military plays in protecting our national security. But as I have said before, our national security is not just about how much money the Pentagon receives. It's also about a strong economy -- which necessitates investments in jobs, education, housing, and health care for our people.

"At a time when our country is facing a health care crisis and is in deep economic distress due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we need to examine and reorient our priorities, which is why I supported the Sanders amendment."
