Statement of Finance Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley Regarding December 19, 2005 Response from the Health Resources and Services Administration Detection and Prevention of Fraudulent and/or Improper Allocation of Donated Organs

This marks the second time we know that the government contractor has been misled. So it's time to stop relying on information from troubled transplant centers. The information needs to be verified. Penalties should be determined by the oversight and regulatory bodies, including state licensing boards and the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services. We've got two transplant centers that have done wrong. The question for my committee is if the federal agency that's responsible, either on its own or through its contractor, is doing what should be done to deter and catch the bad actors.
