Rep. Cisneros Votes in Favor of the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act

Today, Representative Gilbert R. Cisneros, Jr. (CA-39) voted in support of the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act. This comprehensive bill addresses a wide range of issues regarding policing practices and law enforcement accountability. It includes measures to increase accountability for law enforcement misconduct, enhance transparency and data collection, and eliminate discriminatory policing practices. Rep. Cisneros is a cosponsor of the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act.

"For weeks, Americans in the 39th District and across the country have been calling for justice and change. Today, the House is answering that call with the passage of the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act," said Rep. Cisneros. "Over the past few weeks, I've made it a priority to listen and talk to 39th District residents, Black community leaders, and law enforcement officers. One thing is clear, we have to work together to move our country forward. This comprehensive bill will save lives, curb police brutality, and increase police accountability and transparency. With today's vote, we're taking a step forward in dismantling systemic racism and building a more equal and just nation."

H.R. 7120--The George Floyd Justice in Policing Act does the following:

Mandates the use of body and dashboard cameras;
Bans chokeholds and carotid holds;
Ends no-knock warrants;
Demilitarizes the police by limiting the transfer of military weaponry to police departments;
Enacts steps to end racial and religious profiling;
Establishes a National Police Misconduct Registry;
Reforms qualified immunity;
Improves the use of pattern and practice investigations on police misconduct;
Creates law enforcement development and training programs to develop best practices.
Rep. Cisneros is cosponsor of several other police reform bills.

On June 8th, Rep. Cisneros met with Orange County Black leaders to discuss police and criminal justice reform.

On June 18th, Rep. Cisneros attended the North Orange County Public Safety Task Force's monthly meeting to discuss police reform legislation.
