Rep. Ted Budd (R-NC) announced that he will be introducing the No Tolerance for Rioters Act alongside Rep. Dan Bishop (R-NC) this week. The legislation will double the federal penalties associated with rioting, looting, and other acts of violence against individuals or property.
Rep. Budd said in a statement:
"All Americans are rightfully outraged by the death of George Floyd. The peaceful demonstrations against racism in the wake of his death are totally appropriate. However, rioting is never the answer. We cannot allow our streets, our businesses, our communities, and our fellow citizens to be terrorized by violent looting. If you engage in rioting, you disgrace the cause you claim to fight for, and you should be punished to the fullest extent of the law. I'm going to introduce a bill tomorrow that doubles the federal penalties for looters. We can't allow this violence to fester. We must not allow the tragedy of George Floyd to multiply into more tragedies across our country, like the death of Police Chief David Dorn in St. Louis."
