Diaz-Balart Blasts Dean for Doom-and-Gloom Defeatism

WASHINGTON—Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart (R-FL) today responded to statements made by Democrat Chair Howard Dean yesterday on a San Antonio radio station. Dean said that the "idea that we're going to win the war in Iraq is an idea which is just plain wrong."

"Just when I thought Howard Dean couldn't shock me anymore, he opens his mouth and speaks," Diaz-Balart said. "His disgraceful shrill of defeatism and negativity runs counter to the progress that has been made in Iraq and everything our troops have courageously worked and sacrificed for. Our brave troops deserve better.

"Not too long ago, people said similar things about Afghanistan, yet progress is clearly evident there," continued Diaz-Balart, who returned from an official trip to Afghanistan on Monday. "All of us want our troops to return home as soon as possible, but the goal of a stable and free Iraq must be accomplished first. Dean's shameful doom-and-gloom rhetoric damages our nation's reputation as a defender of freedom, gives hope to terrorists, and undercuts all that our troops have accomplished."
