Letter to the Hon. Christopher Taylor, Mayor of Ann Arbor - Dingell Applauds Ann Arbor City Councilmembers for Passing Medicare for All Resolution

Dear Mayor Taylor,
Thank you very much for your leadership and support of the Ann Arbor City Council's
Resolution in support of my legislation, the Medicare for All Act of 2019. Strong advocacy at the
state and local level is critical as we continue to push for a single-payer healthcare system that
provides every American access to comprehensive quality and affordable healthcare. I'm so
proud that the Ann Arbor City Council has joined me in this fight.
The COVID-19 pandemic has made it clear that bold reforms are needed to address the
inefficiency and inequity in our current healthcare system. As the only industrialized nation that
does not guarantee healthcare for its citizens, America is uniquely vulnerable to the global health
emergency that we are currently facing. With over 30 million residents lacking healthcare, and
hospitals across the country forced to furlough and lay off frontline workers during this crisis, the
pandemic has shown the fractures in our healthcare system.
Medicare for All promises to streamline our fragmented healthcare system to lower costs
for drugs, procedures, and services, while ensuring that no American is left behind when it
comes to accessing the lifesaving health care they need. On February 27, 2019, myself and Rep.
Pramila Jayapal introduced the Medicare for All Act to fulfill this promise for the American
people.
The overwhelming support of the resolution underscores the need for bold action as we
look to legislation to address the longstanding issues with healthcare in the United States. The
Resolution in Support of my legislation, the Medicare for All Act of 2019, makes it clear that the
time to act is now, and your support has put us closer to making comprehensive universal health
care in America a reality.
