"This weekend, we"ve seen many peaceful protests over the unjustified killings of #GeorgeFloyd, #BreonnaTaylor, & #AhmaudArbery. I, too, am outraged over these deaths & pray justice will be swift, with urgency to address underlying issues of distrust & suspicion that divide us.

Unfortunately, too many of these protests, including those in my own state of AL, haven't stayed peaceful. Violence & anarchy have broken out. We"ve seen businesses looted, national monuments defamed, law enforcement threatened, & lives and livelihoods of innocents endangered.

None of this should be tolerated & these actions do not serve a just cause. Justice cannot be served by inflicting more injustice, & these dangerous riots have distracted from the original tragedy.

I mourn injustice with those wronged, & this week, that sadly includes both those grieved by the deaths of Floyd, Taylor, & Arbery, and those who harmed amidst violent riots.

We must work for equality & justice while we also work to restore law & order again if we have any hope of change or any hope for people of all races to be able to respect & value one another so we can live together in unity & peace."
