Letter to Carolyn Maloney, Chairwoman of House Committee on Oversight and Reform - Steube Demands Former FBI Director Comey Testify Before House Oversight and Judiciary Committees After Allegations of Misconduct in Flynn Investigation

Dear Chairwoman Maloney,

In the course of proper due diligence of Congressional oversight functions, I write to you to
formally request a hearing for former FBI Director James Comey, at the earliest possible date, to
testify to potential misconduct and political bias in the investigation of former National Security
Advisor Michael Flynn.

As you may know, on Friday, April 24, the Department of Justice provided material to Attorney
Sidney Powell representing Flynn. Among the material are contemporaneous notes and emails
from investigators on the case with statements such as:
* "what is our goal? Truth/Admission or to get him to lie so we can prosecute him?"
* "Could the admonition… be given at the beginning at the interview? Or does it have to
come following a statement which agents believe to be false… it would be an easy way to
just casually slip that in"

If the FBI is unsure of what their goal is in the course of a high-profile investigation, then it is
proper that we should make sure how common this is within the FBI and that their investigations
are always keeping with the mission of the Bureau. The evidence so far made public is clear that
there is enough smoke in the air to pull the fire alarm. To exercise our responsibilities, we must
be aware of how deep political decisions influenced the launch and conduct of investigations.
When Inspector General Horowitz released his report on Crossfire Hurricane, it was only the
prelude to a larger report about widespread FISA misconduct. Now, we must see if the
misconduct perpetrated against Flynn is a prelude to revelations about larger political misconduct
in the FBI.

The FBI has done impeccable work in cleaning up house since the days of J. Edgar Hoover. As
no one wants those days to return to our country, I welcome the opportunity for Mr. Comey to
present his case as to the conduct of the Flynn investigation and the potential political bias
therein.
