Letter to the Hon. Megan Brennan, Postmaster General and CEO of the United States Postal Service - Norton Writes Postmaster General After Learning of Mail Delivery Problems in Ward 8

Letter

Date: May 4, 2020
Location: Washington, DC

First, I would like to express my considerable gratitude for our postal workers, who are on the front lines during the coronavirus pandemic, delivering necessities and mail to our citizens.

I write because numerous residents of Ward 8 here in the District of Columbia have contacted me concerning problems receiving their mail in recent weeks. Constituents have said that they sometimes go several days and receive no mail at all, receive a large quantity at once, and frequently receive mail late at night. Most of the complaints seem to be related to the Congress Heights Post Office in Southeast D.C. I understand that when constituents call the phone number listed for that post office, they are unable to speak with or to be transferred to employees assigned to that post office.

With stay-at-home orders and social distancing, it is more important than ever that residents receive their mail in a timely fashion. Residents rely on the United States Postal Service (USPS) for needed goods so they do not have to make as many purchases in person. They rely on USPS to deliver their medicines. And they rely on USPS to deliver their economic impact payments and tax refunds. And they will rely on USPS to vote by mail. It is more important than ever that they have adequate service from USPS.

I am deeply appreciative of the work our postal workers are doing during this pandemic, and I have been moved by seeing USPS trucks during my own walks for exercise. I am not sure how frequency of service has been affected in other wards in D.C., but I have not heard similar concerns. I therefore ask that you look into the Congress Heights Post Office.

I appreciate your attention to this matter and ask that you respond in writing within three days of the date of this letter.
