Congressman García's Statement about COVID Outbreak in Migrant Youth Shelter in Chicago

Congressman Jesús "Chuy" García issued the following statement regarding the coronavirus outbreak in a migrant youth shelter under the jurisdiction of the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) in Chicago:

"Trump's delayed response to the coronavirus pandemic continues to endanger the lives and safety of Americans and immigrants alike. I have been advocating along with my colleagues from the Congressional Hispanic Caucus for sanitary and humane conditions for all immigrants in detention centers. I have joined my colleagues to call on the Administration to release non-violent immigrants to prevent outbreaks inside the centers. More than three weeks ago, U.S. District Court Judge Dolly M. Gee called for the release of migrant children. ORR must safely and quickly release migrant children to those who have sponsors and must ensure that detention centers for children and adults implement safety and sanitary measures to protect them."

Congressman García was also co-signer of a letter that several Members of Congress sent to Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar and Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf demanding they comply with Judge Gee's order to release migrant children currently in detention.
