Congressman Greg Gianforte (R-Mont.) recently joined a bipartisan group of lawmakers urging U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Alex Azar to provide immediate assistance to rural hospitals and clinics. They asked Azar to use resources included in the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act to sustain rural health providers.

"Montana's rural hospitals and health centers are vital to our communities and the many Montanans who rely on them for care," Gianforte said. "Under normal circumstances, rural health care providers are under considerable financial strain, and preventing the spread of COVID-19 has made their already challenging situation worse. It's critical that HHS quickly get resources, as provided under the CARES Act, to rural providers so they have the support they need."

As a result of the COVID-19 outbreak, most rural hospitals have stopped performing elective procedures and seeing non-urgent patients, further threatening rural hospitals' financial viability. Gianforte and the lawmakers called for immediate steps to provide financial relief for rural providers.
