Underwood Announces $14.6 Million in Federal Resources for Illinois Coronavirus Response

Today, Congresswoman Lauren Underwood (IL-14) announced that $14.6 Million in federal resources has been awarded to help the state of Illinois' response efforts the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The funding has been made available through the Coronavirus Preparedness and Response Supplemental Appropriations Act, which was passed by the House on March 4, 2020 and strongly championed by Underwood.

"This funding represents a strong commitment to supporting our community as we deal with this public health emergency and the economic repercussions," said Underwood. "My most important priority is keeping our community safe, I'll continue to work with state and local officials to ensure we have the resources we need to respond to this virus. But, we all have important roles; if you can stay home, stay home; wash your hands frequently for at least 20 seconds; if you feel sick, call your doctor before you go in to a hospital; and stay tuned to coronavirus.gov for updated information or reach out to my office anytime."

The federal resources awarded by the CDC can be used for the following activities, including, but not limited to:

Epidemiology
Surveillance
Laboratory
Case identification
Public health management and risk assessment of travelers and other persons with potential coronavirus exposures and confirmed diagnoses
Travelers health
Data management
Equipment, supplies, and shipping
Infection control
Surge staffing
Distribution and use of medical material
Emergency operations and coordination
Risk communications
