Rep. Cisneros Condemns Leader Mccarthy, Gosar for Spreading Xenophobia and Endangering Asian Americans

Today, Representative Gilbert R. Cisneros, Jr. (CA-39) condemned House GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy (CA-23) and Rep. Paul Gosar (AZ-4) for spreading xenophobic language and endangering Asian Americans.

"It's completely unacceptable and reckless for any member of Congress, let alone the leader of the Republican Party, to use xenophobic and racist dog whistles. Leader McCarthy and Rep. Gosar know better," said Rep. Cisneros. "Whether it's at school, on public transportation, or at their small business, the Asian American community has faced increased harassment, discrimination, and physical assault since the coronavirus outbreak. When Congress should be focused on the facts, helping the American people, and dispelling misinformation, it's irresponsible that these two members of Congress are escalating xenophobic hostility. Leader McCarthy and Rep. Gosar should apologize."

Rep. Cisneros joined the leaders of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC), Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC), Congressional Black Caucus (CBC), Congressional Native American Caucus, and Congressional Progressive Caucus (CPC) in calling on Leader McCarthy and Rep. Gosar to apologize for calling the 2019 novel coronavirus (COVID-19) the "Chinese coronavirus," or the "Wuhan Virus," and are urging all members of Congress to avoid stoking xenophobia that puts people at risk.
