Rep. Adriano Espaillat Statement on The Impact of Trump Administration's Muslim Ban

Statement

Date: Feb. 20, 2020
Location: New York, NY

Today, Rep. Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) released the following statement on the anniversary of the Trump administration's Muslim ban and actions taken as recently as last week to add six additional countries to the administration's restricted travel list, many from regions where Muslims and others face immense violence and persecution.

"To understand the impact and harm of the Trump administration's Muslim ban, one need not look further than their community, listen to their peers or instructors at school, or speak to their colleagues on how this racist and destructive policy has upended families and communities," said Rep. Adriano Espaillat (NY-13).

"I have witnessed the pain of a spouse without their partner and children without their parents. I have witnessed premier institutions of higher education lose the best and brightest minds unable to contribute to ground-breaking research and workforce innovations. And worst of all, I hear with each individual story, the belief that in the United States, the American Dream has become fractured.

"When I first went to JFK Airport in 2017, I was resolved to fight this racist policy. This was a promise my Democratic colleagues and I made to our constituents. We don't break our promises. As the Trump administration moves to expand this misguided policy, I was proud to join my colleagues to vote in favor of the NO BAN Act and will continue my efforts to undo the pernicious harm President Trump's Muslim ban has caused our friends, our family, and our nation."
