Press Release

Date: Feb. 25, 2020
Location: Washington, DC

Congresswoman Veronica Escobar (TX-16) issued the following statement in response to the Supreme Court decision today in Hernández v. Mesa, blocking relief to Sergio Adrián Hernández Güereca's family and families of future cross-border shooting victims:

"Today's Supreme Court decision denies justice to the family of Sergio Hernández, an unarmed teenager from Ciudad Juárez, who was fatally shot by a U.S. Border Patrol agent, and sets a dangerous precedent by making exceptions to accountability and due process.

"Congress must stand up for border residents, ensure accountability and oversight within the Department of Homeland Security, and stop the militarization of our community exacerbated by the Trump administration."
