U.S. Rep. Ted Budd Announces 13th District Service Academy Nomination Board

U.S. Representative Ted Budd (NC-13) is pleased to announce the 13th District Service Academy Nomination Board. The nomination board met on Saturday, January 4th at Davidson County Community College to review applications, interview candidates, and recommend those qualified for nominations to the various service academies. The board consists of veterans and community leaders from across the 13th District.

The members of the 2020 service academy nomination board are Mr. Ronald Hope of Advance, Mr. Matt Reyes of Mooresville, Mr. Doug Lain of High Point, Mrs. Rayne Brown of Lexington, Mr. Wayne Davidson of Greensboro, Mr. John Sherden of Mocksville, and Mr. Frank Pugh of Greensboro.

"I am grateful to the service academy nomination board for their service to the 13th District and I'd like to welcome our two newest members," Budd said. "One of the most rewarding responsibilities of a member of Congress is to nominate students to the service academies and I look forward to the honor of announcing our nominees in the coming weeks."

The members of the 13th District Service Academy Nomination Board are as follows:
Ron Hope of Advance

Ronald Hope is the former National Commander of the DAV. The United States Army veteran served 31-years as a DAV National Service Officer. He received a bachelor of business administration degree from Tarleton State University. As member of the 227th Assault Helicopter Battalion of the 1st Air Cavalry, he was wounded when his helicopter was shot down during a combat assault resulting in the amputation of his left arm at the shoulder. Among his military decorations, Mr. Hope received the Purple Heart, multiple Air Medals, Army Aviation Badge and Vietnam Service and Campaign medals. He is a life member of the DAV Department of North Carolina and Department of Texas. Hope has served on the board for three years.
Matt Reyes of Mooresville

Matt Reyes is a 1989 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point. Reyes deployed to Saudi Arabia with the 101st Airborne Division as part of the rapid deployment force which responded when Iraq invaded Kuwait. He subsequently served during Operations Desert Shield and Storm and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for his service. Reyes is currently the Managing Broker for Charlotte at eXp Realty LLC and also runs a team of agents providing real estate brokerage and investment advice in the Greater Charlotte area. Reyes has served on the board for three years.
Rayne Brown of Lexington

Rayne Brown Graduate of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Brown served three terms in the N.C. House of Representatives where she represented District 81 until she retired in 2016. Previously, Brown practiced social work in Davidson County for 35-years. Brown has served on the board for three years.
Wayne Davidson of Greensboro

Lt. Col. Davidson was commissioned out of the Air Force Academy in 1978. He was a C-130 Navigator from 1978-1988 before serving as a Staff Officer at the Military Airlift Command until 1992. He then was an instructor at the Air Command and Staff College. He finished out his career serving three years from 1995-1998 as an exchange faculty officer at the Royal Air Force Staff College. Upon retirement, he became the Air Force JROTC instructor at Dudley High School where he worked until 2015. Lt. Col. Davidson is now a flight instructor with Piedmont Flight Training based out of Smith Reynolds Airport. Davidson has served on the board for two years.
Doug Lain of High Point

Doug Lain is a 1967 graduate of the University of North Carolina. He retired after 27-years of service from the United States Air Force Reserve as a Lieutenant Colonel. Lain was a former recruiter for the United States Air Force Academy and served on the 6th District Service Academy Board for 33-years. Lain owns Lain Insurance and Property Management in High Point. Lain has served on the board for three years.
John Sherden of Mocksville

John Sherden is a 1960 graduate of West Point, founder of Euro-drawer, Inc., and is active in the Piedmont West Point Society. John endowed a scholarship at Hebron Academy in Maine, where he graduated, for candidates to West Point. Currently there are four cadets at West Point from this source He also mentors Davie High School students that have an interest in attending West Point. This is Mr. Sherden's first year on the nomination board.
Frank Pugh of Greensboro

Frank Pugh is a 1988 graduate of West Virginia University. He was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Air Force and served as an Acquisition Officer at Dover Air Force Base. He deployed in support of Operation Desert Shield/Storm and was responsible for the buildup of "tent cities" throughout the region. He later joined a Joint Operation Command, responsible for fixed and rotary wing aircraft across the services as an Administration Contracting Officer. After 8 years of active duty, Major Pugh joined the reserves and continued in support of Joint Operations. A small business owner of 23 years, Major Pugh continues to support the North Carolina West Point Parents group, Association of Graduates and is the father of a 2019 West Point Graduate. This is Mr. Pugh's first year on the nomination board.
